Inspired by the excellent jack-o-lanterns at Extreme Pumpkins, I carved 19 jack-o-lanterns for last Halloween, but haven't posted the photos... until now. For context, I have included both daytime and nighttime pictures of the better ones. Click on any of the pictures below for larger versions.
First we carved our "pumpkin family." Kerah carved the white one to be the mom, and I carved the other three.
Based off of some of the designs on Extreme Pumpkins, I ventured a cannibal lantern....
Another nod to something I saw on Extreme Pumpkins, here's one loosely based on Pinhead from Hellraiser. Notice the staples on the mouth and the tear....
I had some sod left over from planting a tree, so I thought it might be fun to use that to make a mohawk for a jack-o-lantern....
And finally, my favorite -- the aquarium full of pumpkin heads. Notice how the ones on the bottom are sad or weird, while the ones on top are happy or mean. The effect was really nice when all of the heads were illuminated on Halloween, and these definitely received the most comments from trick-or-treaters...
For those wondering what tools were involved, I used some little plastic pumpkin carvers for kids, some serrated-edge knives of various sizes, a couple of big spoons, a soil scoop garden shovel, a SKIL power jigsaw, a Milwaukee 18V power drill, a Milwaukee Sawzall, a staple gun, and a hammer (because every job needs a hammer).
